England won the FIFA U-20 World Cup for the first time by beating Venezuela 1-0, claiming their first global title at any level since 1966.

A first-half strike from Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin proved enough for victory in Suwon, South Korea – although Paul Simpson's team needed a late penalty save from Freddie Woodman to claim the trophy. The Newcastle goalkeeper brilliantly blocked Adalberto Peñaranda's spot kick after the Venezuela forward, who plays his club football for Spanish side Málaga, had been fouled by Kyle Walker-Peters.

"This is the reward for some incredible work, some incredible sacrifices that they've had to make," said Simpson. "After the semi-final I said there couldn't be a prouder Englishman anywhere in the world, but I've topped that today. I can't believe the feeling of pride I've got and I know that's the same for the players.

"I don't think you can get a better feeling than when the referee blew the final whistle to know we were world champions. We've waited 51 years to say that as an England team. It's an incredible feeling and I don't think it will ever go away."

Italy, who England beat 3-1 in the semi-finals, defeated Uruguay on penalties to finish third.
