Third Lyon win dents German dominance

Lyon are only the second to boast three UEFA women's club titles, denying Germany a tenth victory in 15 editions by beating Wolfsburg on penalties.

Frauen-Bundesliga teams rarely looked back after Frankfurt triumphed against Umeå IK in the first edition of the UEFA Women's Cup in 2002. Frankfurt added further wins in 2006, 2008 and 2015. That latter success took Germany to nine wins in 14 years but Lyon, not Wolfsburg, secured a third title this time around.

Indeed, on three of the six occasions German clubs did not win the competition, a Frauen-Bundesliga side was beaten by Lyon in the final. This was the ninth straight edition with at least one German finalist.
