Monaco was the focal point as UEFA moved into the 2017/18 season – and issue 171 of UEFA Direct gives pride of place to the events that took place in the Principality to herald the new campaign.

UEFA’s official magazine looks back at the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League group stage draws on the shores of the Mediterranean, as well as awards ceremonies that saw Real Madrid’s Portuguese ace Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Dutch UEFA Women’s EURO star Lieke Martens crowned 2016/17 UEFA Men’s and Women’s Players of the Year respectively.

At the same time, UEFA’s new #EqualGame diversity and inclusion campaign was launched in Monaco, and UEFA Direct has the details of the kick-off of an initiative that will strive to show why everyone has the right to enjoy football – irrespective of ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation or religious beliefs.

Hungarian blind footballer Istaván Szabó – one of the incredible people who make football what it is, epitomising #EqualGame’s spirit and ethos – is featured in a photo spread in which Istaván’s deep love for the game shines through.

The UEFA Super Cup is a spectacular curtain-raiser to the season, and UEFA Direct looks at the competition’s history before recalling how UEFA Champions League title-holders Real Madrid overcame their UEFA Europa League counterparts Manchester United on an exciting night in the capital of FYR Macedonia, Skopje.

Bringing joy and happiness to children through football is one of UEFA’s key missions, and UEFA Direct covers the opening of a new football pitch at the Zataari refugee camp in Jordan ─ an event attended by UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.
