Karel Vertongen, a long-standing member of the Royal Belgian Football Association (URBSFA/KBVB) Executive Committee and former UEFA committee member, has died at the age of 78.

European and Belgian football is mourning the loss of Karel Vertongen, a member of the Royal Belgian Football Association (URBSFA/KBVB) Executive Committee for nearly two decades and long-standing UEFA committee member, who has passed away at the age of 78.
Karel Vertongen served on his national association’s executive body from 1986 to 2005, and was also chairman of both the technical and security committees. He was an honorary member of the Belgian FA.
He became a member of the UEFA Stadia Committee in 1990, and served as vice-chairman from 1996 to 2000. From then until 2009, he was a member of the UEFA Stadium and Security Committee. Karel Vertongen was also a member of the Amicale des Anciens circle of fomer UEFA committee members.
