John Delaney played at amateur level for a number of clubs in the Munster region, in particular Tipperary club St Michael's FC.

After a spell as secretary of Waterford United FC, Delaney joined the national council of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) in 1999, and in 2001 became the association's youngest-ever treasurer, at the age of 33.

Delaney was appointed interim CEO of the FAI in 2004, and was confirmed in the role in 2005. In March 2019, he became FAI executive vice-president. He was elected to the UEFA Executive Committee at the Helsinki Congress in April 2017.
